Gold prices up, food stable in Kabul
Wadsam

Prices of gold edged up during the outgoing week in Kabul, while other consumer products’ rates remained stable, retailers said on Thursday.

Abdul Baseer, a jeweller in the Lycce-i-Maryam neighbourhood, told Pajhwok Afghan News the price of one gram of Arabian gold increased from 2,200 afs to 2,300 afs.

The same amount of the Iranian variety jumped from 1,850 afs to 1,900 afs, he said, linking the rise in gold prices to global market trends.

Food prices saw no changes, as a 50-kilogram bag of Brazilian sugar sold for 1,850 afs, the same quantity of Pakistani flour for 990 afs and rice for 2,800 afs — the rates same as last week’s.

Haji Fazl Rahman, the Food Traders’ Union head, said a 5-kg tin of Momin ghee cost 410 afs, a kilo of African black tea 190 afs and a similar quantity of Indonesian green tea 165 afs.

But wholesale prices varied from retail rates in some parts of the city.Yar Mohammad, a shopkeeper in the Taimani locality, sold a 50-kg sack of Pakistani rice for 3,000 afs and a 50-kg bag of Brazilian sugar for 2,000 afs.

He said the same amount of Pakistani flour was priced at 1,100 afs, a five-kg tin of ghee at 480 afs, a kilogram of African back tea at 220 afs and Indonesian green tea at 190 afs.

A gas dealer in the Taimani, Rahmanullah, said one kilogram of liquefied gas was sold for 45 afs, the same price as last week’s.

Fuel prices also remained unchanged over the week, with a litre of petrol costing 65 afs and diesel 63 afs, said Siddiqullah, a filling station owner in the Taimani area.

Meanwhile, moneychanger Ahmad Shah said the buying rate of a US dollar was 50.5 afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees accounted for 548 afs.

Last week’s exchange value of the greenback stood at 50 afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 547afs, he said
